In order to guarantee the devices working well 24/7, reliable and convenient network with power system are very essential.

The article would show 3 ways to extend network from one place to another. If you want to extend network between 100-500 meters, the first solution is right choice to go. If longer distance is required, like home to farms, the last 2 ways has provided some useful ideas.

  • Long distance up to 500 meters.

In this way, we can use PoE products to extend network up to 500 meters. It allows us to extend network distance like home to backyard warehouse.

 Equipment needed:

1. PoE switch

2. PoE extenders

3. Cat5e cables

You may confuse what is PoE and how it helps to extend network? PoE, power over Ethernet, is a technology that transports data and power over single Ethernet cable. That’s mean we do not need to prepare extra power adaptor which will reduce cables and simplify installation.

How it works? PoE switch transports data and power to front-end IP devices. It always has power source equipment such as PoE switch or PoE injector at back-end. These PoE switch or injector will send the power and data to the extender, the PoE extender catch it and boost up for next 100 meters. 4 units PoE extenders link together with daisy chain setup can provide totally 500 meters PoE network.

Firstly, we need one PoE switch port to connect to PoE extender. Now the PoE extender gets data and power which will transport both of them to IP device or next PoE extender with Cat5e/cat6 cables.

If we need to expand RJ45 ports at the front end, we can use pass through PoE switch. Similar as PoE extender, pass through PoE switch is powered by a PoE injector at back-end, and create multiple PoE ports for remote ip devices. As the latest IEEE802.3bt standard is employed, the pass through PoE switchsupply total power budget up to 71W.

  • Long distance up to 80KM (Power from front-end)

Equipment needed:

1. PoE switch

2. Fiber cable

3. Media converter

4 .Ethernet cables

If the power source is available at the front end, what we need is the media converter to set up the fiber link network. The advantage of fiber optical cable is fast speed, low latency and long distance. It is basically the light transmission in the fiber cable. The fiber optical signal will be converted back to electronic signal and go through Ethernet cable after media converter.

Firstly, install SFP modules on PoE switch and media converter. If PoE switch has SFP slot, it saves one media converter. Otherwise, two media converters are needed at two building. The network system needs a converter to transfer optic signal into electronic signal.

Now use fiber line to link SFP and another media converter.

Finally we can connect the two building with fiber optical cable.

In addition, if we want to use media converter to back up multiple IP devices, we can connect the media converter to network switch. The switch would get data from converter and support data to multiple IP devices.

  • Long distance up to 2.5km(Power from back-end)

This connection way is to solve the issue while the power source is difficult to acquire at front end. As we know, fiber optical cable does not deliver power and electronic devices need power to supply it work. In this way, building A would like to offer power as well as data.

Equipment needed:

1. Media converter

2. Fiber PoE extender.

3. Siamese fiber cable

Similar as above solution, it needs to set put fiber optical link between two buildings. The fiber optical can’t transport the power, however we can add one pair copper or Siamese fiber optical cable which has integrated copper cable to send the power in parallel. The voltage drop is the first issue for long distance power transmission. DC55-DC57V is properly voltage as it is safety to human being. After fiber PoE extender receives the power, it will boost up the voltage and regulate to DC48V output for front end PoE devices. Both non-PoE and PoE equipment can’t be connected to the fiber PoE extender at the other end. Constructed to voltage drop, the maximum meaningful PoE distance is 2500-3000 meters, the voltage will become too low to supply the PoE ip device, most of the power will be loss on the cable. How to Power Long Distance Security IP Cameras

  • PoE extender

If moving the NVR is not possible, PoE extender is a handy tool. PoE extender is a kind of device which is used to extend the distance of cable in order to repeat data and power to powered devices. In this way, the distance of powering the IP camera is in a maximum of 500 meters by utilizing daisy chain set-up, that is you can use up to 4 units of extender to deal with long distance power supply issue. As the fiber optical simply employs the light to transport data, there is no way to add the power to fiber optical cable. The practical solution is that add a pair of copper conductors or use siamese fiber cable which has integrated copper cable to transmit the power in parallel. Now the power supply units can move to the back-end or far away from your camera. While choosing the right copper cable, the maximum power distance can reach 2.5km. As we mentioned, the voltage is always the number one issue for long distance power transmission. The power will convert to heat and lose inline. The well-designed fiber PoE extender can boost up the voltage to meet standard PoE requirement

While there are multiple IP cameras closed to an area, using fiber PoE extender may involve in higher cost, as each camera needs independent fiber link and fiber PoE extender. The hardened fiber PoE switch is capable of providing multiple PoE ports for the IP cameras. As the power consumption is larger for mulitple IP camera, the power supply units has to be closer to the hardened fiber PoE switch, because of voltage drop limitations. Unlike the single fiber PoE extender which can move PSU 2.5km behind, the PSU only can stay 800-500 meters far. As the Hardened fiber PoE switch supply standard IEEE802.3af/at PoE, there are still 100 meters extra copper distance between the switch to the cameras which means all the cameras around 100 meters can be gathered together to the hardened fiber PoE switch.

4 Ways to Connect Security IP cameras with Fiber Optical Cable

However, fiber optical cable does have some downsides, such as it is more difficult to be managed during the installation. As it is the fiber glass inside the cable, simple will break the cable. All the fiber optical cable has limitation. The fiber optical cable employs the light to transmit the data, all the connection need to be precise. The Ethernet cable connector can be made with crimped tools easily, the fiber connection requires special tools or craftsmanship to manual join two fiber cable in the field. 1. Use a pair of media converters

The media converter converts the electric signal to fiber optical signal or versed, so the camera’s video can be transported over the fiber cable. Two media converters are needed at both side to build the fiber link.

Usually, there are two terminal ports with a converter – RJ45 and SFP fiber port. Like convenient Ethernet ports, RJ45 is linked to security camera or main network. The two fiber ports is linked together by using the fiber cable. The fiber cable distance between camera and the main network can be 80km.

How to choose fiber cable and which connector to use depends on the SFP module installed in the media converter. The SFP module is the critical components in the media converter which generate the optical light. The single mode fiber cables are suitable for security cameras as the distance can be totally longer than multimode fiber. The SC and LC are two types of connectors. The SC connector is a little about two size bigger than LC connector. If you decide to make the fiber connection manually, SC connector is the right choose. LC connection has to be processed by using  tools.

In the media converter solutions the power needs to be dealt with separately. Both camera and media converters require power source, unlike the copper connection which can employ PoE technology to transmit both power and data over simple Ethernet cable. The fiber optical technology simply transmit the light which can’t carry the electricity.

2. Fiber with copper wire

The second way is replace the front media converter with fiber PoE extender which can be considered one special type of media converter. Except for converting the video stream to fiber signal, the extender also provide the PoE to remote IP camera. As the media converters accept power input range from 12V DC to 48V DC, the power supply unit can be moved to the back if the AC power source is not present at the front end. In case, two copper wire or composide fiber can be employed to send the DC power such as DC 48V. The maximum distance between the power supply and the camera is 2.5km. Besides, outdoor environment could be harsh, especially the summer when the sunshine is cooking the enclosure. So all the media converters, SFP modules and the extenders need to bear the wide temperature range. The industrial hardened grade products will be used for this outdoor application.

3. Fiber PoE Switch and a media converter

If there are several security IP cameras gather around in the area, fiber PoE switch is the handy tool. The fiber PoE switch has mulitple PoE ports which can takes in more than one security IP cameras, supplying both data and power over Ethernet cable. Instead of wiring each fiber optical cable to each security IP cameras, one fiber link is enough between the media converter and the fiber PoE switch. The connectivity between the fiber PoE switch and the camera stays with convenient Ethernet cable. Thanks to PoE technology, the power sources are eliminated, and with no need to be closed to each of the camera. It simplify the network design and saves the total cost. However, there is controversial opinion with this solution. Some people still prefer independent fiber link between each IP camera, because the main network which seems more reliable. One of the fiber link fails to work, which doesn’t effect the rest of the cameras. As long as the fiber PoE switch and the result of the components including Power supply unit, SFP module are the industrial hardened grade products, the Fiber PoE switch is still the reliable solution.

4. Fiber PoE Ring Network

Make an image of all the camera are being deployed straight on the street or cycle around the big area. The topology network infrastructure is inconvenient and complicated. The ring fiber network connects each others by using the fiber optical cable to create daisy chain. You may ask what if one of the switch goes failure, all the cameras linked to that switch will be offline. The ring network has to deal with these issue. The first switch need to connect the last switch to create the link. It creates the redundant path. If one of the switch goes failure, the network will reverse and take the opposite path to return to the main network. As the fiber is compact, the small wire can carry multiple strand fiber optical, it is easy to setup the straight fiber link with returned strand in the same conductor. The fiber ring network needs special fiber PoE switch. Simply connecting two switches with two fiber optical patches will break IEEE802.3 protocols. There is firmware inside the switch to determine which path directly transmits the data.

Use the fiber optical cable to connect security cameras is more easy than people expected after picking the right components. As the fiber employs light to transport the data, it requires less maintaining in future.
