Long Distance Network and Power Extension with PoE System

As we know, set up IP camera system to improve security safety, a good network is the premise. Many applications require the installation of IP Cameras that are beyond 100 meters away from the closest monitoring center (e.g. networked Ethernet switch). In this case, network signal and supplying power would become too weak for remote IP devices working well 24/7,because Ethernet cable has a transmission limitation of 100 meters. The solution to deal with this issue is to extend network and power. Power over Ethernet (PoE) is the most common solution.

The starting point of Power over Ethernet technology is that small network devices such as VoIP phones, wireless access points, and IP cameras which can obtain power and data directly from the Ethernet cable, and there is no need to separately lay power lines, simplifing system wiring and reducing the construction cost of network infrastructure.

There are some advantages to choose PoE solution for network and power extension. PoE technology simplifies cabling and saves labor costs. Ethernet cable simultaneously transmits data and power. PoE eliminates the need for expensive power and its installation time, saving money and time. Users can safely and conveniently integrate the existing PoE of non-PoE devices on the network, which can coexist with existing Ethernet cables. The PoE power system is running under DC48V which is perfectly safe for human being.

Depending on your environment and application, there are two methods to extend your Ethernet network beyond the nearest monitor center.

1.Extension over copper cabling with PoE extender

When you’re connecting your IP cameras to workstations in a building, PoE extender is handy devices.

PoE extender is a kind of device which is used to extend the distance of cable in order to repeat data and power to powered devices. In this way, the distance of powering the IP camera is in a maximum of 500 meters by utilizing daisy chain set-up, that is you can use up to 4 units of extender to deal with long distance power supply issue. It is flexible to meet the demands of different distance.

Before using extenders, you should know your IP devices with how much power consumption. As the extenders comply with different standards, their output power will be different. Figuring out this point is important to choose a suitable PoE extender. What’s more, number of required interfaces, and rate (10/100/1000M) also should be considered.

Here we take two most common types of PoE extender as example.

  • IEEE802.3af PoE extender

IEEE802.3af does not exceed 15.4W at maximum. Due to the loss of transmission wires, it can supply power to devices with a maximum power consumption of less than 12.95W. It is sufficient for general IP cameras, but for high-power front-end equipment such as PTZ camera, the output power is not up to standard.

A PoE extender that complies with the IEEE802.3at standard can supply power to devices with a maximum power consumption of less than 25.5W. The PoE extender is ideal for applications include parking systems, video surveillance, tank monitoring and connecting power sub meters.

If you want to install more than one IP camera, you can add a PoE powered switch in the system to expand network conveniently. However, when multiple ports of the POE passthrough switch are powered at the same time, it is necessary to calculate whether the power enough to supports the front-end IP devices. If not, the backup power supply needs to be added to increase the power supply of the switch. Therefore, choosing the passthroug switch, you should make clear how many devices can be powered up. Total power budge is an important indicator of a PoE switch.

The network monitoring project is different from ordinary network integrated wiring. It is a large volume of data transmission with high power, which requires 24/7 uninterrupted work. The use of qualified PoE devices and cables is the guarantee of the stability of the whole system.

2. Extension over fiber optic cable with media converters

When connecting to a distant department, a building across campus or across town where too far for common PoE extender to satisfy. Fiber optich cable is an effective long distance network extension solution. Besides, fiber optic is a rather secure option. It is generally used with a pair of media converter. As we know, fiber optical cable does not deliver power, and media converter can transport fiber optic to eletronic signal, and vice versa. Usually, there are two terminal ports with a converter——RJ45 and SFP fiber port. Like convenient Ethernet ports, RJ45 is linked to security IP camera or main network. The fiber cable distance between the camera and the main network can be up to 80km.

There are also other new products that integrate media converter in their interface. Fiber PoE extender is one can also link fiber cable. And the fiber PoE extender can be installed in the front-end with a PSU that can be placed far away from the IP cameras. Therefore, it’s no need to worry about the power issue. The maximum distance between the power supply and the camera is up to 2.5km.

Besides, outdoor environment could be harsh, especially in hot summer day. So all the media converters, SFP modules and the extenders need to bear the wide temperature range. The industrial hardened grade products will be used for this outdoor application.

If there are several security IP cameras gather around in the area that you need to moniter, fiber PoE switch is a convenient good choice. The fiber PoE switch has mulitple PoE ports which can take in more than one security IP cameras, supplying both data and power over Ethernet cable. Instead of wiring each fiber optical cable to each security IP cameras, one fiber link is enough between the media converter and the fiber PoE switch. The connectivity between the fiber PoE switch and the camera stays with convenient Ethernet cable. In addition, this fiber PoE switch is well suit for industail environment, because it features industail grade design.

The information above shows the ways for IP camera long distance network and power extension. Hope can help you to deal with the issue in a suitable way.

How to Power Long Distance Security IP Cameras

IP camera(Internet Protocol camera)is differ from analog CCTV camera. It is a type of digital video camera that receives data and send video stream via the Internet. The IP cameras are generally applied in the areas where security is needed, mainly used for surveillance purpose. There are various types of IP cameras including WiFi IP camera, wired IP camera, and webcams.

Today, we will talk about how to power long distance wired IP cameras. If the distance between the monitoring center (e.g. switch) and the deployment location is beyond 100 meter, supplying power could be an issue in such long distance. The power will sharp down as the distance increases to a certain extent, which results in the insufficient power voltage to supply the front end IP cameras.

There are several practical ways to deal with long distance power for security IP camera. If the AC power is presented closed to cameras, the power adaptor can provide the power to the camera. In this case, only the data transmission needs to be concerned. While the power is difficult to acquire, you will need to send the power from monitoring center or somewhere far from the cameras. Several ways can be employed to get the job done. The most common solution is the Power over Ethernet (PoE)

Firstly let’s understand what is PoE. PoE(Power over Ethernet) is a new technology that transmit data and power simultaneously along with a twisted ethernet cable for up to 100 meters. The power source equipment such as PoE switch or PoE injector will add the power to Ethernet cable and send to the remote IP camera. We have mentioned above, IP camera differ from analog CCTV camera, One of the advantages of IP camera is that it can be powered through the ethernet cable and operate without a dedicated power adapter. The PoE was developed according to TCP/IP network, the maximum distance is still 100 meters. In order to transmit the power and data beyond 100 meters, extra devices will be needed.

Majority of IP cameras require a central network video recorder (NVR) to handle the recording, video and alarm management. IP cameras encode and process the video data, then stream it to the NVR recorder which is used for storage and remote viewing. PoE NVR can be considered as a video recorder integrated with PoE switch, it can transmit data and power through one ethernet cable for 100 meters, plus the distance between PoE NVR and back-end switch, the total distance increase to 200 meters. What to do is to move the PoE NVR closed to the camera in order to obtain the extra distance. The downside of this solution is monitoring may need to move along with the NVR.

  • PoE extender

If moving the NVR is not possible, PoE extender is a handy tool. It is flexible to meet the demand of different distance. If the IP camera deploys at outdoor, some protective tools are better to be prepared. The cable needs tube to protect in the harsh environments and although there are waterproof extender, using a closure is a good protection for future maintaining, especially when it is buried under the ground in case of moisture. Cat5e and Cat6 cable are two types of Ethernet cable for common use. You are supposed to choose one with pure copper cable to avoid voltage drop problem.

  • Fiber PoE extender

If the distance is longer than 500 meters, or fast speed and low latency are required for your security IP cameras. The fiber optical is the right way to choose. Fiber optic cabling is an effective method to overcome the distance and bandwidth limitations of ethernet cable. What you need is one fiber PoE extender and two media converters deployed at two sides separately. These two devices allow you to set up the fiber link network. As the fiber optical simply employs the light to transport data, there is no way to add the power to fiber optical cable. The practical solution is that add a pair of copper conductors or use siamese fiber cable which has integrated copper cable to transmit the power in parallel. Now the power supply units can move to the back-end or far away from your camera. While choosing the right copper cable, the maximum power distance can reach 2.5km. As we mentioned, the voltage is always the number one issue for long distance power transmission. The power will convert to heat and lose inline. The well-designed fiber PoE extender can boost up the voltage to meet standard PoE requirement

While there are multiple IP cameras closed to an area, using fiber PoE extender may involve in higher cost, as each camera needs independent fiber link and fiber PoE extender. The hardened fiber PoE switch is capable of providing multiple PoE ports for the IP cameras. As the power consumption is larger for mulitple IP camera, the power supply units has to be closer to the hardened fiber PoE switch, because of voltage drop limitations. Unlike the single fiber PoE extender which can move PSU 2.5km behind, the PSU only can stay 800-500 meters far. As the Hardened fiber PoE switch supply standard IEEE802.3af/at PoE, there are still 100 meters extra copper distance between the switch to the cameras which means all the cameras around 100 meters can be gathered together to the hardened fiber PoE switch.

4 Ways to Connect Security IP cameras with Fiber Optical Cable

As the increasing awareness of effective property protection, more and more people turn to surveillance system for help. Security IP camera is one of the popular devices.

Security camera system also known as video surveillance system, is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. Security IP cameras are often used for surveillance and applied in areas that may need monitoring such as banks, stores, and other areas where security is needed.

Making certain of how to connect is of great significance to make it work. Generally speaking, there are three methods for the connection of IP camera, namely, copper wire, wireless and fiber optic cable. we will mainly focus on the connecting ways by using fiber to settle down long distance IP camera deployment problem. If you are confronting with similar situation or interested in the connecting ways, please keep reading.

To begin with, let’s understand the value of fiber optical system to figure out why utilize fiber to connect  IP camera.

Fiber optic transmission is faster than copper wire. As we know, the speed of photon is faster than the speed of electron, there is a huge inherit speed difference between them. It is easily for fiber optical system to deliver 10G network. The higher speed network such as 40G, 100G, 400G are all employed fiber optical transmission. The copper can deliver 10G network, but require very special cat7 cable.

The attenuation is important in video camera system, the video broadcast is the huge data stream. Fiber optic transmission is in less attenuation. The signal always decreases as the distance increasing but the fiber optic cable can deliver lower attenuation which means that the transmission creates less signal loss. For example, if you want to deploy a IP camera over 100m, using fiber optic cable only causes 3% signal loss, while on the contrast, copper wire will lose 94% signal of the same distance.

Fiber optic cables are impervious to electromagnetic interference. Copper wire will produce electromagnetic currents that can interfere with other wires and wreak havoc on the network after improper installation. The passive signal (light) in fiber optical system make no contact with external connection and the power surges after lighting will not be absorbed by the fiber optical cable. That is why Fiber optic cables are more stable after deploying in the field, which eliminates frequent cable replacement.

The last but not least, since the fiber optical simply transmits the light in the system, which can prevent fire accident since it doesn’t conduct electricity. What’s more, it prove higher security because tapping the data from light is more difficult than electrical copper.

However, fiber optical cable does have some downsides, such as it is more difficult to be managed during the installation. As it is the fiber glass inside the cable, simple will break the cable. All the fiber optical cable has limitation. The fiber optical cable employs the light to transmit the data, all the connection need to be precise. The Ethernet cable connector can be made with crimped tools easily, the fiber connection requires special tools or craftsmanship to manual join two fiber cable in the field. Small deviation could causes mass light loss in the system.

The fiber optical link is suitable for long term operating. Once the link is setup, it can be used for years without extra maintaining. Therefore, it is a relatively good tool used to connect security IP camera, especially in the long distance deployment.

Now, let’s get to the point. In the following, we will demonstrate 4 main ways to connect IP cameras with fiber cable.

1. Use a pair of media converters

The media converter converts the electric signal to fiber optical signal or versed, so the camera’s video can be transported over the fiber cable. Two media converters are needed at both side to build the fiber link.

Usually, there are two terminal ports with a converter – RJ45 and SFP fiber port. Like convenient Ethernet ports, RJ45 is linked to security camera or main network. The two fiber ports is linked together by using the fiber cable. The fiber cable distance between camera and the main network can be 80km.

How to choose fiber cable and which connector to use depends on the SFP module installed in the media converter. The SFP module is the critical components in the media converter which generate the optical light. The single mode fiber cables are suitable for security cameras as the distance can be totally longer than multimode fiber. The SC and LC are two types of connectors. The SC connector is a little about two size bigger than LC connector. If you decide to make the fiber connection manually, SC connector is the right choose. LC connection has to be processed by using  tools.

In the media converter solutions the power needs to be dealt with separately. Both camera and media converters require power source, unlike the copper connection which can employ PoE technology to transmit both power and data over simple Ethernet cable. The fiber optical technology simply transmit the light which can’t carry the electricity.

2. Fiber with copper wire

The second way is replace the front media converter with fiber PoE extender which can be considered one special type of media converter. Except for converting the video stream to fiber signal, the extender also provide the PoE to remote IP camera. As the media converters accept power input range from 12V DC to 48V DC, the power supply unit can be moved to the back if the AC power source is not present at the front end. In case, two copper wire or composide fiber can be employed to send the DC power such as DC 48V. The maximum distance between the power supply and the camera is 2.5km. Besides, outdoor environment could be harsh, especially the summer when the sunshine is cooking the enclosure. So all the media converters, SFP modules and the extenders need to bear the wide temperature range. The industrial hardened grade products will be used for this outdoor application.

3. Fiber PoE Switch and a media converter

If there are several security IP cameras gather around in the area, fiber PoE switch is the handy tool. The fiber PoE switch has mulitple PoE ports which can takes in more than one security IP cameras, supplying both data and power over Ethernet cable. Instead of wiring each fiber optical cable to each security IP cameras, one fiber link is enough between the media converter and the fiber PoE switch. The connectivity between the fiber PoE switch and the camera stays with convenient Ethernet cable. Thanks to PoE technology, the power sources are eliminated, and with no need to be closed to each of the camera. It simplify the network design and saves the total cost. However, there is controversial opinion with this solution. Some people still prefer independent fiber link between each IP camera, because the main network which seems more reliable. One of the fiber link fails to work, which doesn’t effect the rest of the cameras. As long as the fiber PoE switch and the result of the components including Power supply unit, SFP module are the industrial hardened grade products, the Fiber PoE switch is still the reliable solution.

4. Fiber PoE Ring Network

Make an image of all the camera are being deployed straight on the street or cycle around the big area. The topology network infrastructure is inconvenient and complicated. The ring fiber network connects each others by using the fiber optical cable to create daisy chain. You may ask what if one of the switch goes failure, all the cameras linked to that switch will be offline. The ring network has to deal with these issue. The first switch need to connect the last switch to create the link. It creates the redundant path. If one of the switch goes failure, the network will reverse and take the opposite path to return to the main network. As the fiber is compact, the small wire can carry multiple strand fiber optical, it is easy to setup the straight fiber link with returned strand in the same conductor. The fiber ring network needs special fiber PoE switch. Simply connecting two switches with two fiber optical patches will break IEEE802.3 protocols. There is firmware inside the switch to determine which path directly transmits the data.

Use the fiber optical cable to connect security cameras is more easy than people expected after picking the right components. As the fiber employs light to transport the data, it requires less maintaining in future.
